Beginning Band Information

Thank you for considering the East McDowell Trojan Band.  The information below should answer most of your questions.  If you have further questions or concerns, please contact me through email or by calling the school.

What instrument can I play?

Students may choose from one of the following instruments:

Flute
Oboe
Clarinet
Alto Saxophone
Tenor Saxophone
French Horn*
Trumpet
Trombone
Baritone*
Tuba*

*These instruments are available for a low rental fee from the East McDowell Trojan Band program.

Students will be able to audition for the following instruments midway through the 7th grade year:

Bass Clarinet (must start on the clarinet)
Baritone Saxophone (must start on the alto saxophone)

Students will be able to audition for percussion at the end of the 7th grade year.  If you are interested in percussion you must start on another instrument at the beginning of the 7th grade year.  Students selected for the percussion will be in a separate percussion class during their 8th grade year.

How do I register for band?

Registering for band is easy!

Step 1: Register for band when you sign up for 7th grade classes

Step 2: Fill out the registration form located on this website under the Multimedia Blog link.  Fill out all of the information and click submit.

Step 3: Attend the drop-in Band Registration night on Monday, May 11, 2009 between 6:00 - 8:00pm.  The meeting will be in the band room at East McDowell Junior High School.  Park in the back parking lot and follow the signs.  This is a drop-in meeting, but the instruments will be assigned by first come, first serve.  There will be a limited number of students assigned to each instrument.

How do I get an instrument?

There are 3 options for obtaining an instrument:

1. Rent or rent to own: Representatives from The Music Center (Morganton, Asheville and Hickory) will be at the Registration Meeting on May 11, 2009.  They will have brand new instruments available for rent to own and used instruments available for rent only.  Be prepared to make a deposit ($30-$50) if you plan to use this option.  The rent only and rent to own plans range in price from $30 - $60 per month depending on which instrument you play.  I also highly recommend the maintenance and repair insurance for at least the first year.  The Music Center is a local owned company that I trust.  They provide excellent service and their prices are very competitive.  You are also welcome to rent from other companies.

2. Purchase or already own:  If you would like to purchase an instrument, the representatives from The Music Center will also offer new instrument purchases.  If you don't purchase from The Music Center, please make sure you purchase from a reputable company or individual.  It is also very important to purchase a quality instrument.  I can help you find reputable brands if you are considering a purchase.  If you already own an instrument, please bring that instrument with you to the Registration Meeting on May 11, 2009.  I will look at the instrument to make sure it is of good quality.  These instruments will need to be sent to a repair shop to be checked for good playing condition.

3. Provided by the band program: The East McDowell Trojan Band is able to offer french horns, baritones and tubas for a low fee of $25.00 per year.  This fee helps pay for repairs and maintenance on these instruments.  This is a very affordable way to participate in the band if renting or purchasing an instrument is not an option for you.

Other expenses:

Required: (due at the beginning of the new school year)
Tuner $15.00
Concert Polo Shirt $20.00

Optional but highly recommend:
Portable music stand $12.00 (for at home practice)
Band T-Shirt $10.00

I will work with anyone to make band affordable.  I do not want any student to miss out on this opportunity because of a financial situation.  Please talk with me and we will come up with something that will work.

Can I be in the band and play sports or be in other clubs?

Yes!  Many members of the band play sports and participate in other after school activities and clubs.  Band class meets during the school day.  There will be very few after school obligations.

Can I join band after 7th grade if I change my mind?

No!  This is the only opportunity to join band.  Students must begin band at the beginning of the 7th grade year.  If you think you want to be in band, now is the time.

Can I join band without any music experience?

Yes!  Many of the students that join band have little or no previous experience with music.  During the 7th grade year students will learn how to read and write music.  They will also learn how to play their instrument.

Beginning Band Camp:

Students will need to attend the Beginning Band Camp before school starts.  Students will receive their instrument and learn how to assemble, maintain and care for their instruments.  They will also learn how to hold the instrument, make a sound on the instrument and proper playing positions for each instrument.

The exact dates for the camp have not been determined at this time.  It should occur one or two weeks before school starts.  The dates will be determined and announced as soon as possible.
